Summary

This paper follows another paper co-written by the same author on the supporting technologies of CIM and looks at how each fits into a CIM system. It describes the basic requirements, both technical as well as non-technical, of a CIM system development and implementation programme. The aim is to give a novice potential user a fair idea of what such a programme would demand of an organisation and its personnel. The importance of proper planning, management strategy and control right from the early conceptual stage to its implentation is emphasised. Potential users are warned of the limitaions, pitfalls and false beliefs of the CIM technology and that it is not an all conquering industrial panacea but will only deliver results if it is designed and planned to do so.
