Summary
Automatic flexible assembly systems (FAS) are increasingly being implemented by many manufacturing organisations. In order to process different product models with varying batch sizes in such a system, it is often necessary to carry out set-up operations. In some flexible assembly systems, especially those involving highly reliable equipment, the total set-up time, over a given time span, can be significantly higher than the total time required to repair broken down equipment.
