Abstract

Revenue projections suggested that seven days a week in the Midlands was the prime contract on offer in 1967, but in the event the London weekday contract proved the most valuable in terms of both revenue and prestige. The London ITV area extended from Henley-on-Thames in the west to Sheerness in the east, and southwards from Bedfordshire into the southern counties. It contained a quarter of all Britain’s homes, and the successful applicant was destined to become the largest programme-maker in Independent Television.
