Abstract

Sporting occasions of wide appeal form an essential ingredient in a popular television service and the establishment and general acceptance of ‘the concept of ITV sport as an centralised element in a plural service’ have been described in an earlier volume of this history.1 In a typical period some 12 per cent of ITV programme production and 10 per cent of programme output were devoted to sport.2
