Abstract

Westward Television’s territory extended from Land’s End to Weymouth, taking in the whole of Cornwall, most of Devon and parts of west Somerset and south Dorset. This was predominantly agricultural land, with a population of no more than 1.5 million, but every summer it was invaded by some 20 million holiday-makers and every year a growing number of the well-to-do came to live in the area on retirement.
