Applications of Human Monoclonal Antibodies in Non-isotopic Immunoassays

  • Chapter
Reviews on Immunoassay Technology

Abstract

The specificity of antigen-antibody interaction is the basis for all types of immunoassays (IAs) used in determinations of chemical, biological and pharmaceutical compounds. In all these IAs, a variety of fluorophores (Coons et al., 1941; Soini and Hemmila, 1979), luminescent compounds (Hersh et al., 1979), radioisotopes (Berson and Yalow, 1957), and enzymes (Avrameas, 1969), are chemically conjugated to either antibodies or antigens. The conjugation reaction between the tracer compound and the antibody or the antigen is performed in such a manner that the resulting complex retains the functions of both reactants.
