Generalisations about national characteristics are not always very helpful. They may do nothing more than underline prejudices and cannot present a very accurate view of what individuals are really like. The first reading passage shows that some of the traditional views about characteristics of the Germans are still widely held. The second passage, however, gives the views of foreign students in the Federal Republic, who find that the reality does not always coincide with their expectations.
