Abstract
Everybody always hopes, of course, that they will never be ill or unwell when they are abroad. The complications of different health systems, added to the language problems of explaining what is wrong with you, mean that such an experience can be a very testing one. However, just in case the worst should ever happen, if not to you personally, then to a friend or member of your family, the language of this chapter should help you with some of the problems. First of all, see whether you can recognise some of the language in instructions for taking tablets and in an advertisement for a hotel. Then there is a letter from a German girl to her English pen-friend, telling her about a recent illness.
