Historians as Nation-Builders

Part of the book series: Studies in Russia and East Europe ((SREE))

Abstract

Biographers deal with two kinds of prominent individuals. The first type consists of those whose activity develops in controversial and spectacular situations. Their complex personalities excite the biographer and the reader alike with their flamboyance and their dramatic achievements. The second group are plodders whose life and work are systematic and well defined from beginning to end. Their success is the result of organised and well-determined activities. Their life is not a mountain torrent flooding the plain but a fertile fall of rain, deeply — but slowly — soaking the soil. The biography of those individuals is less exciting but the heritage they leave to posterity is equally meaningful.
