Abstract
One of the joys of reading Shakespeare springs from the infinite variety of interpretations and judgements which his plays invite. He has a truly remarkable ability to make his audiences think about possible meanings and develop differing conclusions. This is particularly evident in the case of The Merchant of Venice.
