Abstract

The manager needs to call on the interviewing skills covered in this Workbook frequently in the ordinary course of her or his work. But you should realise that you can increase your skills as an interviewer only slightly by reading material like this. Hopefully, the study materials, together with a conscientious ‘go’ at the 25 activities so far, will have given you a useful push towards greater effectiveness as an interviewer and as a manager. However, at some time, if it hasn't happened already, you will have to do it for real – THAT IS WHEN YOU WILL REALLY LEARN! Just like any other human endeavour, you can read all around the subject, but learning only really takes place when you have a chance to put it into practice. What you need now is experience of interviewing by having the authority to be involved in interviewing. The ‘Action Plan’ in the final Activity in this Workbook (Activity 26 below) will help steer you towards increasing your authority to get more experience than you may already have at present.
