Abstract
The first chapters of this book have considered ageing from a broadly individual perspective, physically, psychologically and sociologically. In this chapter a more statistical viewpoint is taken in looking at the actual numbers and situation of elderly people in Great Britain today. Mention has already been made of the vital need to see elderly people as individuals and to avoid blanket theories, but to enable rational forward projection and planning to take place it is also essential to comprehend these demographic and economic aspects of our ageing population.
