Abstract

Figure 5.1 shows the relationship between the elements of a set Y, and those of a set X. It can be seen that if y ϵ Y and x is the value it is related to in X (shown by an arrow), then y = x + 2. This mathematical ‘rule’ which changes a value of x into a value of y is called a function ormapping. It can also be written f : xx + 2.
