Abstract

The GCSE examination aims to encourage students to talk about the mathematics they are doing, describe the strategies they have used in problem solving, and indicate how they might extend the work they have done. It is also possible that you may be asked to take some form of mental arithmetic test (aural examination) as part of the coursework. The author has included four such test papers in this chapter for you to try. You will need a friend or relation to read the questions to you. Try to write down the answers without any working. Tests 3 and 4 have an information sheet which you will need to remove from the book first. Before attempting the papers, look at the following questions which contain a few hints.
