Abstract
The first reading passage below, taken from a publicity hand-out in a large store, shows that the consumer society is as much a feature of the Federal Republic as of other Western European countries. The passage also shows the extent to which English (or American) words are used in such promotions. Then follows a guide to the departments of a big store, and the helpful instructions of the Deutsche Bundespost on how to address letters.
