Abstract
Alcohol is firmly established as a social drug within western society. It is consumed on many social occasions and is therefore an important part of social life and a symbol of hospitality (Plant, 1979).
‘Progressing through the early, middle and late stages of alcoholism, the person lives and drinks, then lives to drink and finally drinks to live.’ (Mitchell, 1976).
