Abstract

To practise the sort of task you might be asked to undertake in an exam, turn to Ash-Wednesday, Section IV, lines 18–32 (‘The new years walk … And after this our exile’). A typical examination question might be:
  • (a) Explain and comment on any two allusions contained in the passage.

  • (b) How does the style of the passage help to convey the meaning and feeling of the poet?
