Abstract

Jane Eyre provoked immediate acclaim, as well as a great deal of curiosity regarding the identity and sex of ‘Currer Bell’. But two emerging issues proved of greater importance, as they set the agenda for much subsequent criticism: Jane Eyre’s ‘coarseness’, and the improbability of its plot.
