Abstract
The Brontë family grew up in Howarth, a small village perched high in the Pennines. That the daughters of an obscure clergyman in a remote part of England should produce such brilliant books as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights has always amazed the reading public, so much so that one can properly speak of the ‘Brontë legend’. Howarth’s status as the second most visited literary shrine in England indicates how potent that legend has become.
