Abstract

The term ‘information system’ refers to ways in which the information available to an organisation is used, stored, retrieved and accessed. Any organisation needs to utilise as much of the information at its disposal as it can, and to use that information effectively to aid decision-making. In the seventeenth century the philosopher Francis Bacon coined the saying ‘Knowledge is Power’. In the late twentieth century this could be rephrased as ‘Information is Power’.
