Abstract

Ireland has an active and expanding involvement in all areas of biotechnology, from basic research to commercial products.2 The National Board for Science and Technology (NBST) and the Industrial Development Authority in 1983 began a cooperative program to coordinate and develop the growing activities in biotechnology in Ireland. The general goal of this effort was to increase the contribution of biotechnology enterprise to economic development. The backbone of Ireland’s economy is the agricultural sector, and much of the biotechnology research in Ireland reflects the paramount importance of agriculture.

Dr. Brendan Finucane and Mary Gillick, Chairman and Secretary of the Irish Recombinant DNA Committee, are the Contributing Authors for this section. Any inquiries concerning recombinant DNA research activity in Ireland may be addressed to them at the National Board for Science and Technology, Shelbourne House, Dublin 4, Ireland.
