Abstract
Controlled stepping can be elaborated by thalamic cats on a moving treadmill, as dictated by belt position and speed. As the belt moves, the limb reaches a critical backward position from which it is lifted to step forward. Stepping continues until the belt stops. These findings suggest a role for limb afferentation in initiating and maintaining the stepping movements. This report addresses forelimb stepping by thalamic cats and the potential role in its expression of joint afferents and a supraspinal structure, the paralemniscal pontine reticular formation.
