Abstract

In this short chapter I want to draw together two of the main strands, that is, characters and themes — that have been running through all my suggestions for study. This is because it is the characters and themes which make a play interesting and because both these aspects of drama are favourite topics for essays and exam questions. I am going to begin with some general comments about characters and then go on to suggest ways of refining your understanding of them. I shall then examine the way in which the characters and themes of a play interrelate, and offer some guidance about identifying aspects of a theme.
