Abstract

The place where most people start their study of Blake’s poetry is the collection called Songs of Innocence and of Experience, first published in 1794, although Songs of Innocence had been issued on its own in 1789. Before looking closely at the poems, and to avoid grasping vainly at them in a vacuum, we need to have some idea of the man who produced them.
