Abstract
LAWRENCE’S last novel has always had a special place among his works. In the words of a contemporary reviewer, it is ‘a famous author’s infamous book’. Banned for thirty years and only readily available after the widely publicised trial in 1960, for many it is the only book of Lawrence’s that they have read, or at least know about by general repute, while some Lawrence specialists actively dislike it.
