Theories of Nature, Society and Technology

  • Chapter
Man, Nature and Technology

Abstract

This quest for theory arises from the practice of environmental management. It began in the early 1970s, when Torsten Hägerstrand and I attempted to initiate a working group on ‘theories and concepts of man and environment’, a ‘modest experiment in mutual encouragement’ that essentially failed. However, the major reason for undertaking the initiative is still valid, albeit perhaps with lessened urgency.

I am grateful to my fellow conference participants and to B. L. Turner III for many helpful comments, but most of all to a generation of graduate students in geography at Clark University who have shared the search for theory with me.
