Abstract
Although the concerns associated with the acidification of surface waters have only developed over the last two decades or so as the acceleration of the effects has become more obvious, the phenomenon of acid precipitation has been recognised for some time. In 1872 the first Alkali Inspector in Britain coined the term ‘acid rain’ in his book Air and Rain: The Beginnings of Chemical Climatology (Smith, 1872) in which he described rain with a very appreciable acidity.
