Abstract

Over the past twenty-five years, the pattern of causes, duration and frequency of sickness absence, that is absence from work attributed to ill health, has changed. More working days are lost through ill health than through industrial disputes. Sickness absence rates in the United Kingdom average in the order of 16.5 days per employee per year. This is for GP-certified absence, that is, more than seven days. No national statistics are available for self-certificated, short-term sickness absence (STSA) of up to seven days.
