More Ambitious Applications: the Heat Equation
We have written some quite useful programs for solving differential equations in one dimension (chapters 1–5). In fact the programs contain just about all the ideas needed for dealing with partial differential equations in two space dimensions: everything we have done so far will be useful in solving much more complicated problems. But that can wait till the next chapter: in this chapter we shall try to show how easily we can make the programs and notions of chapters 1–5 be of use in solving simple physical problems in one space dimension.
