Abstract

Until 1930, capital accumulation in Colombia had been based on the export of agricultural goods (tobacco, quina, coffee) produced in non-capitalist units. After the 1929 crisis industry became the centre of accumulation, but both its ability to raise the organic composition of capital and its links with the international economy continued to depend on the agricultural surplus (particularly on the revenues from coffee exports). The 1929 crisis and the Second World War forced the country to adopt a model of industrialisation through import substitution (ISI), first without, and then with, the support of the state.
