Although diabetes is a relatively rare condition among school children (about one in five hundred is diabetic), as the great majority of diabetic children attend ordinary schools, it is a condition which many teachers will meet during their teaching career. Many of these children will indeed become diabetic while they are attending school, the symptoms usually appearing quite suddenly and in a severe form so that literally almost overnight the child, his family, his teacher and everyone at school are faced with considerable difficulties of re-adjustment. This Unit is mainly concerned with how the teacher can help in this period of re-adjustment and continue to meet the needs of the diabetic child.
