Abstract

A convenient anthology of Chaucer criticism over nearly six hundred years is J. A. Burrow’s Geoffrey Chaucer (Penguin Critical Anthologies, 1969). A useful summary is the chapter entitled ‘Images of Chaucer 1386–1900’ in Chaucer and the Chaucerians, edited by D. S. Brewer (Nelson, 1966). The reader is referred to these for information on the changing attitudes to Chaucer over the years. This section will concentrate specifically on the Pardoner.
