Abstract

The year of Chaucer’s birth is not known for certain, but it was probably not long after 1340, for in 1386 he described himself as aged ‘forty years old and more’. His mother was probably called Agnes, and his father was John Chaucer, a prosperous London wine merchant, whose social aspirations led him to attend occasionally upon King Edward III.
