Abstract
This chapter consists of three parts: the first part briefly presents the concept of evaluation and draws attention to the most important studies in the field without, however, discussing them in detail (more thorough treatment can be found in Meyer-Krahmer, 1983). Part two contains an outline of the methods presently used in evaluation and summarizes their strengths and weaknesses against a background of the experience accumulated to date in their empirical application. Finally, in the third part, some important results of evaluations (‘lessons’ as defined by Nelson, 1982) of parts of the technology and innovation policies in the Federal Republic of Germany are presented.
