Abstract
China’s educational system, particularly the higher educational system, has a long history of internal, indigenous development and an equally impressive, if shorter, history of influence from abroad. In order to better understand China’s historical experience in the international transfer of higher education and the role this has played in current policy and development issues, it is useful to briefly identify six stages of change during the past 150 years.
