Abstract
Back in 1830, 70 per cent of the British workforce were employed in agriculture. Today, the figure is down to 3 per cent. Only fifty years ago, more than 50 per cent of the British workforce were employed in the manufacture of goods — now the figure is down to 25 per cent. Services will soon employ 70 per cent of the workforce — the same proportion who toiled on the land only a century and a half ago.
