Abstract

There are three kinds of lies — lies, damned lies and statistics,” said Dis-I raeli 100 years ago. Many people would still agree with him. Yet it is plain that we cannot do without statistics. It is vital for the organisation of society that we should know such things as how many people are unemployed, how many single parents there are or how many people are over retirement age.
