Abstract

A total of 1806 million people in the world today live in cities. By the end of the century that number will be 3208 million. If you live in Sweden you can expect to live to be 75 years old. But someone in Nigeria can expect to live to only 37 — half that age. These sort of figures are one reason why the study of population matters. It is more than just the business of counting heads.
