Abstract
In this chapter I put forward the thesis that one of the conditions for the emergence of a fundamentalist sect is a shift in members’ compliance with authority from that legitimated on traditional grounds to that legitimated on charismatic grounds. Members of a fundamentalist sect are those who accept the charismatic authority of a leader who, in turn, draws upon religious teaching that has been legitimated on traditional grounds.
