Abstract
A union’s role in industrial relations can only be fulfilled by representatives of that union. Such representatives might be seriously impeded unless they are allowed time to carry out their duties without loss of pay. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the union will depend on the extent to which members are involved in its activities. The EP(C)A therefore gives officials and members of unions rights to take time off work for these purposes and ACAS has produced a Code of Practice on the subject. Any disputes about these rights may be the subject of a complaint to an industrial tribunal. The conciliation services of ACAS are also available.
