Abstract
Historians of Zaïre have until now neglected the study of motor transport, preferring to research further upon the country's railways and waterways and, when it is dealt with at all, to relate motor transport to them.1 In fact this is seeing twentieth-century transport development from quite the wrong viewpoint. It can be argued that motor transport in Zaïre is now so all pervasive, influencing every aspect of daily life, that rail and water, catering for medium and longer-distance traffic, should be related to it; and, of course, all shorter-distance journeys have always been made by land.
