Abstract

A Nuffield College Committee was appointed by Hebdomadal Council on 29 October 1937, the original ten members being: the Vice-Chancellor (A. D. Lindsay); President of Magdalen (G. S. Gordon); Principal of St Edmund Hall (A. B. Emden); Principal of Lady Margaret Hall (Miss L. Grier); President of Corpus (R. W. Livingstone); Master of University (Sir William Beveridge); Sir Arthur Salter (Gladstone Professor of Political Theory and Institutions); Warden of All Souls (W. G. S. Adams); the Senior Proctor (C. R. Morris, Fellow of Balliol) and W. C. Costin (Fellow of St Johns). The Committee appointed two standing Sub-Committees each under the chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor; a Residential Sub-Committee to prepare estimates of income and expenditure in connection with the residential part of the College and a Research Sub-Committee to consider for what research provision was to be made in the College. The Committee was not given any executive powers until 11 March 1944 when a Scheme of Delegation came into effect. Until then it could only make recommendations to Council and was referred to as the ‘Interim’ committee.
