Abstract

I have maintained in this work that, despite the considerable differences of personal belief and literary style that separate the Brontë sisters and George Eliot, there nevertheless exists between them a special and almost necessary kind of relationship. It can be claimed to be necessary by reason of the historical contiguity of their lives and the external influences to which they were all alike exposed. And it can be said to be special in the vital contribution which these four major novelists made to the form of the English novel in its transition from the Romantic-Idealistic mode to the Realism of the early Modern.
