Abstract
It was long the assumption of Marxists that the economic mechanism of socialism would operate with the sort of parameters typical of the natural sciences; production units would merely be technical and organizational components of the system, and the distribution of available labour would be calculable as a technological relationship. This belief has not been borne out by the practical experience of socialist countries, which has shown that rational calculation requires a determinate system of prices; a much wider field is thus left to economic laws than had originally been thought.
