Abstract

Official statistics on emigration have existed in Italy only since 1876. The data available, however, are rather unreliable because of the uncertain definition of the term ‘migrant’ and because of the rough methods of collection. There are no data on emigrants returning prior to 1902, and only from 1921 on emigrants returning from Europe and from the Mediterranean area (continental migration).
