Abstract

It has been stressed in this study that the motor industry played a central part in the development strategies of most Latin American countries, whether these emphasized import substitution, the promotion of manufactured exports or regional integration. It is not surprising therefore that the impact of the motor industry complex extends well beyond the boundaries of the complex itself to the economy as a whole. As a leading sector it can in many ways be said to imprint itself on the whole ‘style of development’ of the Latin American countries.
