Abstract

The United States population has been growing continually throughout the period 1974–83 (Table 17.1). The latest figure of 234.5 million represents an increase of 9.7 per cent over the 1974 figure of 213.9 million. In 1983 the statistics show that females exceeded males by over six million, the former accounting for 51.3 per cent of the total population.
