Abstract

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, in 1564. We know only that he was christened in Holy Trinity church on 26 April but not the actual day of his birth, though it is widely accepted that it was 23 April, St. George’s Day. Shakespeare’s father was a prosperous glover and leather merchant, a man of property, who was mayor of Stratford in 1568. His fortunes declined from the mid 1570s, and he fell into debt and legal troubles.
