Abstract
Webster expressed his own dissatisfaction with the first performance of The White Devil. Whilst approving of the acting he wrote ‘it was acted, in so dull a time of winter, presented in so open and black a theatre, that it wanted (that which is the only grace and setting out of a tragedy) a full and understanding auditory’. (To the Reader, The White Devil, Revels edn, p.2). However repeat performances and a production of The Duchess of Malfi at the Blackfriars Theatre were much more popular. When they appeared in print, the plays went through several editions.
