“In the middle of a tour I read I had retired.“

Abstract

After I left Louis and the All Stars in 1961 I settled down to a life of gigging around Los Angeles. Sometimes guys would call and if I liked the deal I would go play. There were lots of jazz places I could have worked around the country if I had wanted to, but I was sick of the long hours that night club work entails. I had offers to take a band to New York or Chicago or other places, but I vowed that the days of working till two in the morning were over—for me at least. Let someone else do it if they wanted. Me, I just stayed around Los Angeles.
